    Want to try sailing? 

    Come sailing with one of our instructors, learn some of the basics of sailing, or target specific skills until you have mastered them.

    Fees:

    SCYC Members - $100 

     Non-SCYC Members - $150

    Each Session is 2 Hours

    Opti, Sunfish, Rhodes 19 and 420 are available

    Up to three students aboard our Rhodes19 (when available)


    Required Prerequisite: The Desire to be on the water!

     Beginner/Intermediate Sailing Spring #2

    • Every Tuesday - 4:00pm - 6:00pm/Saturday 9:00 am- 12:00 pm

    • May 7th - June 11th

    • Ages: 8 - 15

    • Boat: Opti. / Sunfish

    The Optimist is the largest sailboat class in the world.  This is the sailboat that nearly all of the greatest sailors in the world learn to sail.  It is an 8' boat sailed by just one person. 

    The Sunfish is one of the largest sailing dinghy classes in America and can accommodate larger sailors that do not quite fit into an Optimist. 

    You learn all the basics of sailing:  wind direction, tying knots, sail trim, steering, bailing water out of the boat, rigging, de-rigging, teamwork, safety etc.  The Course introduces the student to the sport of sailing, starting from the very basics.

    PREREQUISITE:

    • None

    REGISTRATION:

    • Those registering multiple students and/or sessions may select "Invoice Me" and enter payment information only once.
    • Registration is not complete and spot(s) will not be held until payment is received in FULL. 
    • NOTE** Registration will be automatically canceled if payment is not received within 15 minutes of completing online registration.
    • Non-members are welcome!
    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Able to swim 50 yards and pass a swim test. 
    • Provide a U.S. Coast Guard approved Type III Personal Flotation Device (PFD) with a plastic whistle attached.
    • Sailing gloves and sunglasses are recommended for all courses.
    • Sailing boots or shoes that can get wet.
    • Following all SCYC Sailing Covid19 Regulations and SCYC Galley-Club Regulations.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

    • This program is a graduated program. We recommend that each sailor go through the designed progression of the program, for each class of boat.  Every child is different and our instructors will assess your child’s skill and comfort with the level at which he/she is sailing.  Instructors may recommend that some students may need to repeat one of the classes if they have not successfully mastered each skill required in that class.
    • Our program strives to create a fun and safe environment where kids can learn and come to love the sport of sailing.  We emphasize the importance of teamwork, respect, and safety in daily lessons.  Our number one goal is to pass on our passion for the sport to the next generation of St. Croix Sailors.

    Adventure Fun Sail

    This fun program explores the waters of the East End of St Croix from a variety of watercraft, including, Optis, Sunfish and 420s.  Sailors enjoy sailing games, sailing excursions to nearby destinations like Smugglers Cove, and adventures around Teague Bay and neighboring bays.  Sailors will also increase sailing experience and improve on sailing and nautical skills!  We emphasize the importance of teamwork, respect, and safety in daily lessons.  Our number one goal is to pass on our passion for the sport of sailing to the next generation of St. Croix Sailors.

      Opti Race

      The Opti Green Fleet Race is a fun racing program.  Sailors will learn the basics of racing, advanced rigging and  advanced boat handling techniques.  Students should have experience sailing an Opti and be comfortable demonstrating basic sailing maneuvers such as steering, tacking/jibing, and leaving/returning to the beach.

      Prerequisite:  

      • Beginner Opti or other sailing experience

      You must complete the Level 1 online course prior to attending the in-person evaluation. There are no exceptions.  

      US Sailing Level 1 in Person course

      Register as soon as possible for the online portion.  Currently there are several available before the in-person course takes place.  All candidates must have reached their 16th birthday within the calendar year that the course is being held in. Candidates under 18 years of age who complete the course will be designated as a Sailing Assistant until their 18th birthday.

                  • If member parent(s) wish to remain at club after class with their children, parents are responsible to ensure COVID19 protocols are maintained by their children.
                • Able to swim 50 yards and pass a swim test.  
                • Own & wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved Type III Personal Flotation Device (PFD) with a plastic whistle attached. If you can not get hold of one then the club PFDs are available.
                • Sailing gloves and sunglasses are recommended for all courses.
                • This program is a graduated program. We recommend that each sailor go through the designed progression of the program, for each class of boat.  Every child is different and our instructors will assess your child’s skill and comfort with the level at which he/she is sailing.  Instructors may recommend that some students may need to repeat one of the classes if they have not successfully mastered each skill required in that class.
                • Our program strives to create a fun and safe environment where kids can learn and come to love the sport of sailing.  We emphasize the importance of teamwork, respect, and safety in daily lessons.  Our number one goal is to pass on our passion for the sport to the next generation of St. Croix Sailors.

              MISSION STATEMENT

              The Club is formed for the express purpose of promoting interest and activity in the ownership, racing and cruising of yachts and small boats; of providing a meeting place for members whose common interest lies in ships and the sea; of augmenting the recreational facilities and visitor attractions of the island; of exchange and courtesies with other yacht clubs of the United States and Caribbean islands, and of extending to visiting yachtsmen the hospitality of St. Croix.
