    Youth Sailing Team

    Session 4

    Session 4 - March 3rd - May 2nd

    The 420 is the double-handed boat and ILCA is a Single-Handed boat, that both form the base of many local, high school and collegiate programs in North America. Simple and safe for beginning sailors and yet challenging enough for collegiate champions. This Team is for youth sailor's 7th grade and up, including the Good Hope Country Day School (GHCDS) Sailing Team.  This is the Second Fall Session for 2025.  The Team will meet three(3) times weekly. 

    *Sailors must weigh at least 100 pounds to safely sail in the 420 class

    **If you have signed up and paid for BOTH spring sessions you do not need to complete this form**

    No sailing experience necessary, we will train you! 

    Schedule:

    Tuesdays - 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm (Dusk)

    Thursdays - 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm (Dusk)

    Saturdays - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

    *Some Classes maybe cancelled/rescheduled due to other events.

    Any sailor over the Age 12 can Join the St. Croix Yacht Club as a Jr. Member! (No Initiation Fee)

    A Family can Join the St. Croix Yacht Club and take advantage of a discounted Initiation Fee by joining any St. Croix Yacht Club Fall Program.

    Optimist Beginner

    Ages: 7 years - 15 years old


    March 4th - May 2nd

    This class offers an opportunity for young beginner sailors to learn basic boat handling, points of sail, sportsmanship, water safety and rigging while having fun and getting comfortable on the water. Sailors will learn with one or two sailors in each boat. Curriculum typically includes basic knots, parts of the boat, parts of the sail, rigging/de-rigging, launching, points of sail, tacking, jibing, figure 8 course, triangle course, and capsize recovery. Sailors may take the beginner course multiple times as they improve their competency with basic skills.

    Equipment:
    PFDs (lifejackets) are required, sailors who do not have their own may borrow a PFD from the Sailing Program.
    Sun protective clothing & sunscreen are strongly recommended, as is a refillable water bottle (there is a water fill station in the club for refills).
    Other optional equipment: Hat, sunglasses, water shoes, sailing gloves.


    This class is for ages 7 and older. Participants should be able to demonstrate adequate swimming ability in swimming short distances and treading water while wearing a PFD. Scholarships Available!

    Optimist Intermediate

    Session 2

    March 6th - May 2nd

    Optimist Racing - MBJA Sailing School


    This class offers an opportunity for Experienced sailors to build on their basic boat handling, points of sail, sportsmanship, water safety and rigging while having fun.

    Curriculum typically includes points of sail, tacking, jibing, Rules of the Road, triangle course, and the Basics of sailboat racing /strategy. Sailors may take the Intermediate course multiple times as they improve their competency with their skills.

    This Class is for ages: 8 years old to 15-year-old.

    *No Exceptions.

    Friday 4:00pm - 6:00pm (Dusk)

    Saturday - 1:00pm - 4:00pm

    sailing experience required. Beginner Optimist class is a good perquisite.

    Private Sailing Lessons

    Want to try sailing? 

    Optimist, Open Bic, ISCA(Sunfish), ILCA(Laser), 420's, Rhodes 19

    Come sailing with one of our instructors, learn some of the basics of sailing, or target specific skills until you have mastered them.

    Fees:

    SCYC Members - $150.00 for 1 person

    SCYC Non-Members - $ 200 for 1 person

    * Party of 2 - 3: $50.00 per additional person

    Each Session is 3 Hours

    Up to three students at a time.  

    *If a party bigger than 3, that will need to have a special arrangement as it may require additional instructors.


    Required Prerequisite: The Desire to be on the water!

    Open Sailing Program
    Introduction to Sunfish Sailing

     

    The Introduction to Sunfish Sailing class is for beginner sailors or prior sailors who would like to refresh their skills. This class is a combination of onshore lessons and hands-on practice on the water in a Sunfish, refers to a boat that has a moveable daggerboard. 

    The Sunfish is a recreational dinghy used for both leisurely day sailing and one-design racing. 

    This Two (2) day Course, which will be held on Sundays 9:00am - 12:00pm.  You will be taught the basics of sailing, sailing terminology, rigging, knot tying and general seamanship. Participants may take the Intro to Sunfish Sailing class multiple times as they master the basics.

    Sailors may bring snacks or water bottles as desired, as well as order lunch through the St. Croix Yacht Club Galley. The clubhouse has a water fill station for refillable water bottles. 

    Other optional (recommended) equipment: Hat, sunglasses, water shoes, sailing gloves.

    Sailing is a physical activity. Participants should be able to pull themselves out of the water and into the Sunfish, balance on a moving boat, be situationally aware of the vessel's moving parts, and be able to pull on lines that will be under load. Sailors additionally should be able to demonstrate adequate swimming ability in swimming short distances and treading water while wearing a PFD.

    Recommended for ages 18 and up

    2 Spots available.

    This 2 Day Course runs on Sundays.

     April 19th and April 26th

    Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm

    Racing is planned to be in the Buck Island Channel.  The goal is do all the racing for the day without coming back to shore.

    This is the Final USVI qualifier for the 2026 ISCA Open World Championships.

    There will be two (2) qualifying spots available to the top two (2) USVI ISCA Members (who have not already Qualified for the Open Worlds)


    St. Croix Yacht Club Members will get first priority on SCYC ISCA's until April 30th.  Boats will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
