    Private Sailing Lessons

    Want to try sailing? 

    Optimist, Open Bic, ISCA(Sunfish), ILCA(Laser), 420's, Rhodes 19

    Come sailing with one of our instructors, learn some of the basics of sailing, or target specific skills until you have mastered them.

    Fees:

    SCYC Members - $150.00 for 1 person

    SCYC Non-Members - $ 200 for 1 person

    * Party of 2 - 3: $50.00 per additional person

    Each Session is 3 Hours

    Up to three students at a time.  

    *If a party bigger than 3, that will need to have a special arrangement as it may require additional instructors.


    Required Prerequisite: The Desire to be on the water!

    Let the Adventure Begin!

    May 9th - June 12th
       

    This class is for non-competitive sailing. Each week sailors will improve their boat handling and general seamanship through games and short sailing trips. Come have some fun on the water!

    Sailors should have previously taken the Opti Beginner course or be able to demonstrate an equivalent experience level. Sailors should be able to handle at least the Opti on their own safely, capsize & recover, be able to rig, launch, tack/jibe, and sail upwind. Sailors additionally should be able to demonstrate adequate swimming ability in swimming short distances and treading water while wearing a PFD.

    This Course Runs From May 9th - June 12th :

    Fridays:  4:00 - 6:30

    Saturdays:  1:00pm - 4:00pm

    **NO CLASS MAY 23rd**

    Equipment:
    PFDs (lifejackets) are required, sailors who do not have their own may borrow a PFD from the Sailing Program.
    Sun protective clothing & sunscreen are strongly recommended, as is a refillable water bottle (there is a water fill station in the club for refills).
    Other optional equipment: Hat, sunglasses, water shoes, sailing gloves.

    This class is recommended for ages 8 and older.

    Youth Sailing Team

     

    End of Season Wind Down

    May 14th - June 4th

    For Sailors who have been involved with the Youth Sailing Team this past year at the St. Croix Yacht Club.  This is a once-a-week Class that will let the sailors explore and be introduced to the other boats that the St. Croix Yacht Club has to offer. 

    The ILCA: Olympic development boat and great Single-Handed boat

    The ISCA: A great learn to sail to high end racing boat for all ages.  A true Caribbean boat

    The Club 420:  The extras that the 420 has to offer, the excitement of going faster and learning the skills of spinnaker fly and trapezeing!

    The Rhodes 19: A 19ft Keelboat that allows 3 sailors to take on the responsibility of a bigger vessel while using all the sailing knowledge they have learned, in a less wet environment 

    *Sailors must weigh at least 100 pounds to safely sail in the 420.


    Schedule:

    Thursdays - 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm (Dusk)

    *Some Classes maybe cancelled/rescheduled due to other events.

    Open Sailing Program
    Introduction to Sunfish(ISCA) Sailing

     

    The Introduction to Sunfish Sailing class is for beginner sailors or prior sailors who would like to refresh their skills. This class is a combination of onshore lessons and hands-on practice on the water in a Sunfish, refers to a boat that has a moveable daggerboard. 

    The Sunfish is a recreational dinghy used for both leisurely day sailing and one-design racing. 

    The Sunfish, known now as ISCA, World Championship will be coming to St. Croix this Fall, November 4th - 14th!  

    This Two (2) day Course, which will be held on Sundays 9:00am - 12:00pm.  You will be taught the basics of sailing, sailing terminology, rigging, knot tying and general seamanship. Participants may take the Intro to Sunfish Sailing class multiple times as they master the basics.

    Sailors may bring snacks or water bottles as desired, as well as order lunch through the St. Croix Yacht Club Galley. The clubhouse has a water fill station for refillable water bottles. 

    Other optional (recommended) equipment: Hat, sunglasses, water shoes, sailing gloves.

    Sailing is a physical activity. Participants should be able to pull themselves out of the water and into the Sunfish, balance on a moving boat, be situationally aware of the vessel's moving parts, and be able to pull on lines that will be under load. Sailors additionally should be able to demonstrate adequate swimming ability in swimming short distances and treading water while wearing a PFD.

    Recommended for ages 18 and up

    2 Spots available.

    This 2 Day Course runs on Weekends.

    Charter fees apply for use of St. Croix Yacht Club vessels. Some vessel charters require SCYC staff approval. Charters requiring approval will direct you to a waitlist. Please sign up on the waitlist to indicate your interest and our staff will email you.

    Upon picking up your charter, there will be additional form to fill out and hand to the registration desk.
