NEW Adult Sailing Program
Introduction to Keelboat Sailing

The Introduction to Keelboat Sailing class is for beginner sailors or prior sailors who would like to refresh their skills. This class is a combination of onshore lessons and hands-on practice on the water in a Rhodes 19. "Keelboat" refers to a boat that has a permanent keel rather than a moveable centerboard or daggerboard. The Rhodes 19 is a recreational keelboat used for both leisurely day sailing and one-design racing.

This 5-week course will teach the basics of sailing, sailing terminology, rigging, knot tying and general seamanship. Participants may take the Intro to Keelboat Sailing class multiple times as they master the basics.

Life jackets are required, if you do not have your own SCYC has lifejackets available for use. Sailors may bring snacks or water bottles as desired. The clubhouse has a water fill station for refillable water bottles. Other optional equipment: Hat, sunglasses, water shoes, sailing gloves.

Sailing is a physical activity. Participants should be able to move between the club launch and the Rhodes 19, balance on a moving boat, be situationally aware of the vessel's moving parts, and be able to pull on lines that will be under load. Sailors additionally should be able to demonstrate adequate swimming ability in swimming short distances and treading water while wearing a PFD.
