2006 Optimist New Englands Championships:

In early August, the Niantic Bay Yacht Club (NBYC) in CT hosted the 2006 Optimist New Englands Championships. The USVI was well represented with five sailors, two of which are members of the St. Croix Yacht Club. It was a beautiful venue.

The town of East Lyme worked with the NBYC and allowed them the use of McCook Point and Hole-In-The-Wall Beach to accomodate the 373 boats that sailed in the event.

The championship fleet had 336 entries, of which 132 were in the red fleet (13-15 year olds), 162 were in the blue fleet (11 and 12 year olds), and 42 were in the white fleet. The green fleet saw 37 competitors.

Here are the VI results:

  • Billy Gibbons finished 8th overall and 7th in the red fleet.
  • Ian Barrows finished 17th overall and 5th in the blue fleet.
  • Alec Tayler finished 49th overall and 18th in the blue fleet.
  • Alex Coyle finished 53th overall and 33rd in the red fleet.
  • Mack Bryan finished 194th overall and 15th in the white fleet.

US NATIONALS:

The 2006 Optimist US Nationals was hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, in FLA. The conditions were tough with light and shifty winds, lightning storms and extreme heat. The championship fleet had 279 sailors, of which 124 were in the red fleet (13-15 year olds), 123 in the blue fleet (11 and 12 year olds), and 32 in the white fleet (10 and under). The green fleet (usually first year racing sailors) had 65 competitors.

For the championship fleet, they ran 7 races over 4 days, with one discard. The VI, BVI and PR results are as follows.

All of the sailors listed here have either attended our February Optimist Regatta and/or our Memorial Day weekend CROOD Regatta.
